Over $1 million dollars is available for environmental projects as Green Adelaide today opens its Grassroots Grants program for applications.

The grants are for individuals, volunteer and community groups, sporting and recreational clubs, religious organisations, schools and more to apply for funding to improve their local environment.

Green Adelaide Presiding Member Professor Chris Daniels encouraged all Adelaidians to consider how they could apply for a grant to create a greener future for their neighbourhood.

“When it comes to creating a cooler, greener, wilder Adelaide – we can all play a part, and a Grassroots Grant provides you with the funds to take action,” Professor Daniels said.

“We’ve seen some incredible projects empowered by local communities over the years, from large-scale weed removal creating better habitat for wildlife in Aldinga Scrub, to greening initiatives such as the planting out of 21 verges in the Thebarton area, to the full transformation of community spaces including at the Church of Nativity where a sandy patch was turned into a native garden.

“It may be that you are looking to boost biodiversity in your local area, or add shade and greenery around a local sporting field, or even a recreational centre or church keen on more plants to cool the area around your facility.

“Whether your project is going to cost $2,000 or $200,000 – a Grassroots Grant can help!

“This year, we are also hosting new planning and design workshops for potential applicants, in addition to our usual grant writing workshop.

“The workshops are aimed at helping potential applicants learn about how to plan for their project, including what species they could plant in their area.

“This kind of information is key in putting forward a powerful grant application that really does deliver practical, on-ground projects that conserve Adelaide’s coastline, looks after water, build habitat for wildlife, or increase green space for community to enjoy across our city.

The Grassroots Grants program is now in its 6th year and open to applications from within Adelaide’s 17 metro council areas. Applications will close at 5 pm on 7 May 2025.

“Successful applicants will join the 207 projects already in motion or completed, contributing to a cooler, greener and wilder metropolitan Adelaide,” Professor Daniels added.
