Green streets and flourishing parklands
Making our urban areas greener provides habitat for wildlife, enhances biodiversity, and plays a part in improving our mental and physical health. With an increasing number of people living in apartments or houses with small or no backyards, equitable access to quality green space is important to maintain community liveability and to reduce the impacts of climate change.
Urban heat mapping has also identified 'heat islands' in the metropolitan Adelaide area. Generally heat islands are areas with fewer green spaces, trees, shrubs and grass, where large expanses of hard surfaces such as roads and buildings soak up heat on a sunny day, and can be up to 3 to 4 degrees than their surrounds. Increasing urban tree canopy cover and green spaces can offset the impact of heat islands, supporting healthier, cooler communities and building our resilience to the impacts of climate change.
